How can I set up a tour of the Courthouse for my school group or organization?

Tours are available of the County Courthouse by contacting the County Clerk's office at 271-1412. Please let us know the number of students/people in your group and what you are interested in learning about (i.e. history, architecture, county government).

I need a copy of a birth or death record from Buchanan County. How do I obtain these records?

A limited number of birth and death records for the period of 1883-1893 are kept in the County Clerk's office. Please contact the Clerk's Office at 271-1412 if the records you need are within those years. WE DO NOT HAVE RECORDS FOR ANY OTHER YEARS HERE IN THE COURTHOUSE. How do I obtain my Alcohol Server License?

Servers in St. Joseph, Missouri will need to contact the St. Joseph Police Department Records Division at 816-271-4076.

How do I become an Election Judge?

Conducting elections is a big job and we cannot do it alone! We need election judges (also known as poll workers) to help us get the job done during an election day. Being an election judge can be very rewarding for lots of reasons... helping your community by being part of the democratic process, making new friends, and earning some extra money. 

Here are some of the requirements for the position:

  • Must be a registered voter in the State of Missouri
  • Able to work from 5:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Must attend mandatory training session before election day
  • Familiarity with using IPADs is a plus

How do I appeal my Real Estate Property Taxes?

First, contact the Buchanan County Assessor's office at 816-271-1471 to discuss your reason for an appeal, and reach an agreement.  

If an agreement cannot be reached, you may file an appeal with the Buchanan County Board of Equalization.  Complete the Property Tax Assessment Appeal Form and mail, fax or email the completed form to the Buchanan County Clerk's office.  An appointment will be set up with you and the Buchanan County Board of Equalization to discuss your appeal.
