[ARCHIVED] Lost Drunk Driver Found Guilty in Bench Trial

Christian Vonholdt, 26, of Lake Lotawana, Missouri, was found guilty of driving while intoxicated after a trial before Buchanan County Associate Circuit Judge Rebecca Spencer. The defendant had previously waived his right to a jury trial. Evidence presented by Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Joshua Bachman showed Vanholdt was arrested on I-29 in Buchanan County the night of October 19, 2018. After drinking at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas, the defendant mistakenly found his way to Buchanan County while attempting to drive home to the southeast side of Kansas City, Missouri. Missouri State Highway Patrolman Sgt. Mark Wilhoit observed the defendant driving more than 20 miles per hour above the speed limit. Wilhoit testified the defendant passed his patrol car at a high rate of speed then described the defendant’s bloodshot eyes and strong odor of alcohol. A breath test revealed the defendant’s blood alcohol level to be over twice the legal limit. Mr. Vanholdt’s defense attorney, Jeff Eastman, made several attempts to undermine the credibility of the breath test, but Judge Spencer found the defendant guilty and placed him on two years of supervised probation.
