Buchanan County Prosecuting Attorney Ronald R. Holliday on 11-4-19 announced that criminal charges have been filed against a former police officer at Missouri Western State University.
Quentin M. Laws, 31, is charged with the Class A Misdemeanor Offense of Tampering with a Computer, in that between June 20, 2019 and September 14, 2019, he knowingly and without authorization accessed a computer system by accessing the email account of J.V. (an employee of MWSU) without authorization.
The probable cause statement filed with the case by St. Joseph Detectives alleges that the suspect entered the locked office of the risk manager using his police issued keys and remained for several minutes and that this event was captured on video. The PC statement further alleges that the suspect accessed the email account of an employee multiple times using a computer not issued to him for his use and shared that information with others.
Quentin Laws is no longer employed by Missouri Western State University in the Police Department.
The range of punishment for a Class A Misdemeanor in Missouri is from 1 day to 1 year in the Buchanan County Jail, or a fine of up to $2,000.00, or any combination of a fine and jail time.
