Visitation Information

General Public:

  • Inmates can receive one non-contact visit by the general public every Saturday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, except on holidays that fall on those Saturdays.
  • Individuals from the general public who desire to visit an inmate during the allotted visitation times must schedule a visitation appointment Monday through Thursday from 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM and 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM and Friday from 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM.  Appointments can be made in person with the receptionist in the lobby of the Law Enforcement Center or by calling (816) 236-8888.
  • Visitation appointments will be scheduled at the next available time slot.
  • Individuals who visit inmates must be at least 18 years old with an accepted current identification card with a photograph.
  • Individuals will be allowed only one visitation per weekend.
  • Individuals who are currently on Probation or Parole will not be allowed to visit inmates.
  • All individuals are subject to checks for outstanding arrest warrants prior to visiting any inmate.
  • Any individual can be denied a visit with an inmate if the visit would not be In the best interest of justice, case prosecution, or operation of the jail, or could cause security concerns.
  • All visitors must be dressed in proper attire.  Individuals who violate any of the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office policies will be removed from the facility and may be prohibited from any further visitation privileges.
  • Visitation is a privilege and may be revoked at any time an inmate is not in compliance with any rules of the facility or directives by Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office personnel.
  • Any individual discovered delivering contraband into the facility will be prosecuted.
  • Visitors need to be 10 minutes early so they can get checked in.
  • If a visitor does not check in 10 minutes early, then the visit will be cancelled.

Professionals (Non-Attorney):

  • Inmate visitation by professional staff members will be Monday through Friday (except holidays) from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM.  Religious services will be scheduled on Sundays.
  • Professional visits will be held in the visitation area in the non-contact visitation rooms.
    • Probation and Parole Officers who need to conduct a UA will be allowed to contact their clients in the booking area.
    • Probation and Parole Officers who need to conduct other tests or conduct interviews will be required to utilize the non-contact visitation rooms.
  • Visitation appointments will be on a first-come/first-serve basis.  Office members will make every attempt to serve professional members in a prompt and professional manner.  If attorneys are using one or both of the non-contact rooms, then there could be a delay.
  • Prior to receiving a visit, a professional member will be required to produce current identification.  Division of Family Services personnel or Probation and Parole officers will be required to produce official identification and a valid driver’s license.  Clergy will be required to produce their clergy card and a current driver’s license or state identification card.
  • Once the professional’s identification has been verified, the officer in Central Control will then make arrangements for the client to be sent to the visitation area.
  • Professionals may be subject to a search in a manner similar to the search procedure at the Buchanan County Courthouse.  This search would be primarily by metal detection wand and cursory examination of briefcases, bags, or purses.
  • Professional members who require a special visit with a client will coordinate all special visits with either the Lieutenant of Custody or the Lieutenant of Compliance.
  • The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office reserves the right to cancel visits at the need of the office.
  • Visitors need to be 15 minutes early for all appointments in order to get checked in.

Professionals (Attorney):

  • Inmate visitation by professional staff members will be Monday through Friday (except holidays) from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
  • The visitation policy does not apply to attorneys when their client has been arrested and is requesting to speak with their attorney.
    • Attorneys who are contacting their clients immediately after an arrest will be allowed to contact their clients in the no-contact bond room at any time.
  • If an attorney visits after an arrest, their client will be made available as soon as practical pursuant to security concerns and activities occurring in the facility.
  • Professional visits will be held in the visitation area in the non-contact visitation rooms.
  • To make more efficient use of professional visitation time, and the interview rooms are available, attorneys may make reservations to speak with their clients during the regularly scheduled professional visitation times.  Office members will make every attempt to serve professional members in a prompt and professional manner.  If other attorneys are using one or both of the visitation rooms, then there could be a delay.
  • Attorneys that make reservations may make a reservation for any length of time as long as there is space available.  Reservations should be made by calling (816) 236-8828.
  • Attorneys visiting their clients will take the lobby elevator to the second floor of the Law Enforcement Center and contact the officer in Central Control. 
  • Prior to receiving a visit, a professional member attorney will be required to produce a valid Bar Association card and a current driver’s license
  • Once the professional’s identification has been verified, the officer in Central Control will make arrangements for the client to be sent to the visitation area.
  • Professionals may be subject to a search in a manner similar to the search procedure at the Buchanan County Courthouse.  This search would be primarily by metal detection wand and cursory examination of briefcases, bags, or purses.
